Great Basin National Park
Fun facts about Great Basin National Park (https://morethanjustparks.com/great-basin-national-park-facts/)
The park is located in northeast Nevada
It became a park in 1986
It covers an area of 120 square miles
A notable feature of the park is the Lehman Caves, a series of underground chambers and passageways that have been formed by water erosion
It is home to Nevada’s highest peak, Mount Wheeler, which stands at an elevation of 13,063 feet
The annual rainfall is 6 to 12 inches which supports little more than sparse desert or semi-desert vegetation
Some of the oldest trees on earth can be found at Great Basin. The Bristlecone pine grows in isolated groves near the tree line where it can survive for over 4,000 years in extremely harsh conditions
It has some of the darkest night skies in the United States
Great Basin is 1,478 miles from home
At Great Basin National Park I will be camping on Shoshone, Goshute, Ute, Paiute, and Washoe land. I give thanks for their presence here since time immemorial and honor all my Indigenous siblings who have and continue to call this land their home.
